The Challenge: Keeping up with emerging technologies

In 1920, Chester R. (C. R.) England purchased his first Model T truck in the small farming community of Plain City, Utah. Looking for a way to make a living outside of farming, he began hauling produce to Salt Lake City. In business now for over 100 years, his family-owned fleet has seen their fair share of changes in the trucking industry, from the trucks they drive to the technology that keeps them moving. As one of the first trucking companies to implement telematics in their vehicles, the folks at C.R. England know staying on top of technological advances is key to fleet safety and success. That’s why they’re committed to empowering their drivers with the tools they need to do their jobs safely and efficiently. After using the same telematics provider for decades, they recognized the need to consider other solutions that could help their fleet keep up with emerging technologies.

The Requirements to run their fleet:

Their search for a new provider began with a few requirements:

  • Improved driver communication to keep their fleet connected
  • Greater system reliability, stability, and sustainability
  • Ability to develop and deploy proprietary and third-party apps

The Solution

When drivers returned to their trucks, they loved the new system. They found PS Messaging more intuitivethan their previous communication tool and noted the PS Workflow interface was much easier to follow. They also enjoyed how easily the system integrated with their existing navigation solution, simplifying eachworkday from start to finish.

"As word spread about the ease of use of the new system, wehad drivers contacting us asking when it would be installedon their trucks. It was extremely satisfying to see how welland how easily the drivers embraced the new platform." - Rich Farr, Vice President of Technology at C.R. England.

Drivers were excited about the new system and lined up to become early adopters.

Starting with a pilot of only 10 trucks in June, the team was able to test and fine-tune the process to scale and match the demand for the rest of their fleet. Before installation, they received training tools and videos from Platform Science and C.R.England to complete before installation or while their trucks were in the terminal.

During the full rollout, C.R. England focused on completing installations by terminal location and timedbringing in over-the-road trucks accordingly. The installation process for each truck was simple. Technicians could swap out the required hardware and install a new system within 30 minutes.

“Our drivers love it. From the time we first put our 10 drivers on our pilot, they got on it very quickly, learned it really easily, and that first day out, they came back and were happy. They said it’s easy, it’s intuitive, and that really made rolling it out a lot easier.

With their new telematics platform fully implemented, C.R. England continues to grow and evolve their fleet operations.

Platform Science is excited to help them find more ways to increase efficiency and improve thedaily lives of their drivers, from easier vehicle reporting to streamlined driver communication and everything in between. While times and technology change, one thing is certain: our partnership has only begunto scratch the surface of what’s possible when we work together.
