National Truck Driver Appreciation Week: Improving the Driver Experience

Summary: As fleets look for ways to thank drivers for their hard work and dedication, they can take a deeper dive into new survey feedback from drivers on what helps and what hinders in their roles, including fleet technology and tools.

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week runs September 13-19, 2026, and the nation’s leading fleets are pausing to ensure their top resource — their drivers — feel appreciated for the key role they play in fleet success. Many carriers schedule special meals, giveaways, celebrations, and free gifts for their drivers, with leadership reaching out to show their gratitude for the reliability it requires to keep routes on time, compliant, and safe.

Beyond these special gestures during NTDAW, many carriers are making ongoing efforts to attract and retain the best professional drivers by building driver-focused corporate cultures. This starts with understanding drivers’ daily tasks, their frustrations and their favorite aspects of their role, and how technology hinders or helps their jobs.

What Makes Drivers Happier in Their Jobs?

Platform Science recently published a first-of-its-kind report focused purely on Driver Experience, which surveyed more than 1,100 active commercial drivers anonymously. Topics included pay, communication, safety, and technology, with results providing 95% confidence at a plus or minus 5% margin of error.

While top pay rates continue to be a primary differentiator, the Driver Experience Report also uncovered additional elements that can make drivers feel appreciated year-round. For example, respondents consistently expressed a desire for corporate transparency and follow-through on promises, as well as a human connection between management and drivers. Opportunities for direct feedback and responsiveness also positively impact drivers who want to be heard and valued in fleet operations.

Management ride-alongs can provide direct insight into a driver’s day-to-day pain points, while driver feedback committees with representatives from different experience levels offer unfiltered perspectives on what is working and what isn’t. It is important to note that drivers must feel that management takes their input seriously and will follow up with action as much as possible.

What Do Drivers Think About Fleet Technologies?

Technology also plays an important role in driver job satisfaction. In the Platform Science Driver Experience Report, 52% of surveyed drivers said technology influences their decision to stay with or leave a fleet. Interestingly, respondents were evenly split on how helpful technology is: 53% said it makes the job harder, while 47% said it makes the job easier. This illustrates the need for fleets to not only choose their technology wisely — with driver use cases in mind — but also to ensure proper training and clear communication on driver benefits.

Based on the survey, drivers noted that too many disconnected apps and multiple logins across tools turn simple tasks into multi-step processes and busywork. Unclear or inconsistent workflows and unreliable inspection and maintenance tools actually force drivers to use workarounds that waste valuable time. Additionally, a lack of communication on the purpose of tools, especially monitoring policies, can cause distrust and dissatisfaction.

Conversely, drivers say technologies that improve communication with the back office, reduce the number of taps needed to complete a job, and make inspection and compliance tasks simpler and faster go a long way toward improving driver satisfaction. Visible and reliable pay and policy information, available without having to ask or dig, improves trust between driver and carrier.

Appreciating Drivers Year-Round

National Driver Appreciation Week is an excellent opportunity for fleets to connect with their drivers and thank them for their current work. It’s also a great chance to recommit to real ways to improve the driver experience. Often, the fleet technologies that improve a driver’s daily tasks also improve safety, compliance, and retention rates, making it a win-win situation.
