Calling All Drivers: Add Your Voice to New Industry Survey

Platform Science

The commercial trucking industry continues to look for ways to address the high driver turnover rates that remain at critical levels in the U.S. Based on recent studies, the average annualized turnover rate for large truckload firms (those with $30 million+ in annual revenue) is 92.7%, and for small truckload firms, 77.6%.

A high turnover rate causes not only staffing challenges in filling shifts, but also introduces more expenses associated with losing a driver, such as the cost of recruiting, training, providing benefits, and more. Losing an experienced driver can cost a fleet up to $12,000 per driver. Additionally, a high turnover rate can make fleet operations unpredictable, impacting company reputation, safety scores, and reliability. In addition to improving their corporate cultures, fleets are motivated to address the high turnover rate for the fiscal health of their businesses and the future of the industry as a whole.

Why is Driver Perspective so Important?

Fleets have a vested interest in hearing what drivers have to say since they are their “boots on the ground.” An increasing number of fleet managers are proactively developing company cultures that value driver input and collaboration. Hearing real-world feedback on what drivers are experiencing can help shape processes and procedures, keeping drivers safer, healthier, and happier in their work.

As a fleet technology provider, Platform Science is similarly interested in learning more about what is causing this high turnover rate, and how technology tools can make a fleet a more inviting place to work – and to stay – for years. Our main goal is to improve the driver experience, whether that is reducing busywork, streamlining processes, or improving situational awareness and compliance.

Goals of the Driver Experience Survey

Our new survey initiative focuses on gathering real-world driver feedback with the goal of making marked improvements in fleet retention and driver-focused tools. Our plan is to collect and process as much driver input as possible, then create actionable reports fleets can use to improve their retention rates and overall driver experience.

For drivers, we hope the results will offer additional insight into how their experiences compare on an industry-wide level. Sharing their perspective can have a positive impact on their future job environments as well as those of future drivers to come.
